Life doesn’t go as planned, it’s filled with twists and turns. In the novel, Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, Esperanza lives a lovely life filled with riches and joy until her father dies, and her life tragically changes. The theme of the story is we shouldn’t be lazy and that if we have a goal or dream, the only way to get there is if we work hard every day and stay dedicated to this goal. To begin with, Esperanza used to live a life of riches till her father died and her mother got very sick, so she worked hard in the fields to get money for her mother. In the story, she states that “we have little money” but “we are like the phoenix, rising again with a new life ahead” said Abulita (pg 50). Abulita is conveying that even though they moved to America with little money, they have a whole new life ahead of them. Esperanza is determined to help her mother and get her back to health. For this, she must work in the fields for several hours so that she can make money to pay the hospital bills. The story states that “even the poorest man can become rich if he works hard enough” (Pg 75). In the book, it states that “Esperanza thought of her mother in the hospital” all the time (Pg 66).
