currently coach high school field hockey, so as soon as I found this article, I was automatically intrigued to read about this information. In this article, the subjects are 111 field hockey athletes (68 being male, and 43 being female) in an under-16-years-old national championship competition. The average mean age of all the athletes was 14 ¼ years old (Sari, Ekici, Soyer, & Eskiler, 2015). Although the main audience of the information is never stated, it is implied that coaches are the primary target audience. The purpose of this study was to see if there was any positive connection between self-confidence and motivation when it came to a player and their performance. I am a JV coach, so one of my main goals is to get players confident and prepare them for varsity level play. After reading this article, it is clear to me that getting my athletes confident in their abilities is key. The more confidence they go out on the field with, the more motivated they should be in performing. I have definitely been able to tell the difference between athletes that are confident and those who are unsure of their abilities. Athletes that are confident go out and try their hardest, even if they are unsure of the drill or play they are being asked to perform. Their motivation remains high, because they know they have the skills to do what is being asked of them. On the other hand, athletes who don’t feel confident will typically go into that drill or play cowardly and will not have the motivation to give it their all because they don’t believe in themselves. Going forward, I will try to get my athletes confident in their abilities and make them see that they are capable of doing what is asked of them.
