The Devastating Truth of Joining Gangs And its Consequences
Gangs have become a significant issue in modern society, with teenagers joining them for various reasons. Unfortunately, the consequences of gang involvement can be devastating and long lasting. Teenagers join gangs for various reasons, including peer pressure, the need for protection, financial gains, a sense of belonging, and a lack of parental supervision. However, the decision to join a gang comes with numerous dangers that can have a lasting impact on the individual's life, their families, and the community.
One of the primary causes of teenagers joining gangs is peer pressure. Teens often feel the need to fit in and be accepted by their peers. In some cases, gangs may offer a sense of security and protection that is not available in their community. The pressure to conform to the gang's expectations and engage in criminal activities can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems. Moreover, leaving a gang can be difficult, as members may face retaliation, further contributing to mental health issues. A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that "gang membership was associated with greater depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among adolescents" (Voisin et al., 2010).
In conclusion, while there may be many reasons why teenagers join gangs, the dangers associated with gang involvement are numerous and severe. Gang membership can lead to violence, legal issues, limited opportunities, and mental health problems.
