I still remember that day when my mother told me “we are moving”. I was eating a bowl of rice with lentils and some okras. Suddenly, I stopped eating because by moving she didn’t mean moving to a new house or a new city. She meant moving to a whole different country on the opposite side of the globe.
Nepal, is the country, I am talking about. I have so many emotional connections with my country that moving to the United States struck me like lightening. I didn’t want to leave my country. “How am I going to adapt to this country? this culture? these people? There were tons of sleepless nights where I would stare at the ceiling and just think about my family and friends back in Nepal. I wouldn't talk to anyone in school. Language wasn’t a huge problem; however the fear of talking to a new bunch of people was the problem that was stopping me from reaching new heights. It was really hard for me to make any connection with the people here. As everyone says that time heals everything and as time passed by, I started getting used to everything here. My mom took me to Cici’s pizza once. I was amazed by the unique taste that I had apart from my rice and lentils. It was the first time I had ever had any international food. The cheese and the pizza sauce melted in my mouth like cotton candy. A similar moment that I had was the first time I saw snow. Even though I grew up in a mountainous country, I had never seen snow. I recall the mesmerizing scene that the white snow had created in front of my house. I played out in the snow for almost 4 hours. I also started getting used to the people here. I believe that friends are like our family who have seen grow up with our success and failures. They support us and understand us like our parents.
