As an individual who has lived in multiple poverty stricken villages in the Philippines, I understand and have seen the struggles that families go through every day. While I have lived in the United States for far longer than I have in the Philippines it’s impossible to forget, in fact, the startling difference between the two highlights just how privileged we are in this nation. When I was younger I moved from barangay to barangay and befriended many children from different walks of life. Even with little more than the basic necessities to live they were full of joy and happiness that I never could find in America. Moving to America showed me what I didn’t see before and that was the privilege I have always had in comparison to the children I befriended in my childhood. Last year I came up with the idea of purchasing school supplies in bulk around back to school time to take advantage of the low prices and shipping them in balikbayan boxes to local schools in my own barangay. So during that school year, I decided to dive into 3 different clubs and organizations BPA, math league, and yearbook. Out of the three clubs, the most rewarding to me was yearbook. It was rewarding simply because I felt a sense of accomplishment in not only being a part of it but also in leading it. Throughout the year I continued to pester my advisor about it because in that year there weren’t many committed students who wanted to do yearbook which is why there was never any meeting about it. Eventually, my advisor let me take control of the yearbook. There were two of us who worked on the yearbook in that year. I had to be the photographer for all the different events, edit the yearbook, choose the design, and come up with different superlatives.
