The Kids’ CAMPaign Against Childhood Obesity
In November of 2015, the CDC released data from an alarming study of American children, in which they found that over 17 percent of children living in the the United States are considered obese (Ogden). According to CDC health and nutrition specialists, “the dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food and beverage industries and entertainment industries,” (Ogden). the Kid’s CAMP will provide a week-long sleep away camp, in which they will interact with fellow children, and numerous adult supervisors who specialize in health, nutrition, physical education, and many other fields related to the prevention of obesity. Most activists against childhood obesity focus their attention on physical education, but at the CAMP, the counselors will focus on much more. During their stay, kids will be exposed to all aspects of healthy living, such as eating healthy and maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and correctly, and internalizing an ideal body image that promotes physical and mental health. With the help of endorsements from professional athletes, famous chefs, and popular public figures, the CAMPs will incite excitement into the children, and gear them toward collectively living a healthier lifestyle, and spreading their learned ideas to their siblings, friends, and family members. The CAMPs will be offered in several different major cities in the United States, in order to spread awareness to the greatest amount of children possible. The campaign will not only benefit the children themselves, but also the families, who may adopt healthier lifestyles along with their
