Pilgrim families arrived in Plymouth in December 1620 and in May 1607, 105 men arrived in Jamestown for the foundation of the first permanent English settlement in North America. Some may say that these two regions only have similarities because they were English. Although Jamestown and Plymouth have a series of similarities, there are a majority of differences because of religion, geography, economics, government, culture, and successes/failures. There was a variety of similarities between the two regions of Jamestown and Plymouth. Both of these people were Christians but each of them had different denominations. Jamestown is located in what is now Virginia along the south in the Chesapeake region. Whereas Plymouth is in what is now Massachusetts at New England. The people in Jamestown are Anglican which means they are with the Church of England and the people in Plymouth are Pilgrims, also known as Separatist. This group of people are separate from the Church of England. Another distinction is the geography. The characteristics of the region in Jamestown is warm climate, fertile soil, and long growing seasons. However, the characteristics of Plymouth is a colder climate with short growing seasons and is coastal. In addition there was a contrast in the government. Jamestown had the House of Burgesses and Plymouth had the Mayflower Compact. Jamestown had White Male Property owners and it was the 1st representative government in America. This was basically a republic or indirect democracy. This idea came from the Romans. Plymouth on the other hand signed the Mayflower Compact before going on land. They came to America with an idea of self-rule and had town meetings.The ultimate distinction was the Successes. Jamestown was prosperous on tobacco plantations and they had a huge dependence on slavery. Whereas Plymouth was affluent on fishing, trading, and shipbuilding.
