It, by Alexa Chung and A Work in Progress, by Connor Franta--both memoirs. These two books illustrate how the authors both reflect on their life and show the struggles they went through. In fact, both books also talk about going through body image struggle and learning to accept flaws. Alexa Chung, a fashion model and designer, talks about how she struggled with her weight and always being judged that she was “too skinny”. Connor Franta, a YouTube/internet sensation, has always had trouble finding his identity. In A Work in Progress, by Connor Franta, you learn that he was very uncertain about his life in the beginning stages. This memoir shows you how he dealt with finding himself/his identity and body image. “Self-image can be daunting, especially when measured against our peers...I was about eight years old when I first fixated on something about my looks that I didn’t like.” (Franta 113) He started being so self conscious because his brother had called him fat. Connor also had trouble finding himself. “You might think finding yourself is tough and ends in high school. “I am about as far from being a natural gym bunny (see lack of muscle tone)...(Chung 86) She has always been called anorexic or body shamed by people who thought she was too skinny. When she talks about this line, she wishes she could look bigger by working out and being body shamed has really affected her mentally and physically. “I think my pre-cut anxiety stems from many years of being lied to.” (Chung 76) When she mentions anxiety and being lied to, she has always been scared to make a change to her body, in this instance, cutting her hair.
