One of the first notable differences between the two films Frankenstein (1931) and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) is essentially how the storyline of the two films occur as they are not similar to Shelly’s work in the overall direction of events that take place. For example, in Shelly’s work by the end of the story Victor Frankenstein and basically everyone he loves has died. In the “Bride of Frankenstein” at the 1:13:00 minute mark it can be seen that Henry and Elizabeth escape death while the creature Frankenstein and his newly made bride along with Dr. Pretorius are engulfed in the collapsing castle presumably killing them. However, the novel’s version of the creature displays intelligence and an understanding of its actions. It can be read in the novel when the creature states referring to De Lacey’s family that he could have easily “destroyed” their “cottage” and those who lived in it, being De Lacey, Felix and Agatha while glutting himself with the “shrieks and misery” of the situation, yet it did not realizing even in anger murdering them would serve no purpose (Shelly, ch.16). Victor’s conversation with the monster in the novel in chapter sixteen can reveal to readers that the creature has emotions, understanding, and intelligence to which it uses. In Frankenstein (1931) after its creation the monster is relatively dumb as it is always in a state of confusion such as during the scene when he meets Mary at the 37:11-minute mark and throws her in the lake without knowing what he had done to which in the novel he saves
