The story of Hamlet by Shakespeare and the story A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams are both tragic plays that share many similarities. The stories of the main characters, Hamlet and Blanche DuBois, both end in terrible tragedies. In the play Hamlet, the story ends with Hamlet’s demise due to the conspiring plots of Claudius and Laertes. In the play A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche DuBois’ story ends when Stanley rapes her, thus destroying her sexual and mental esteem, and she is then committed to a mental asylum. If neither of these events took place, and either Hamlet or Blanche achieved what they wanted in the end, they may have received temporary happiness and satisfaction, but the happiness would ultimately not last forever. At the end of the play, Hamlet’s end is decided when Claudius and Laertes plot to kill him during a fencing duel and their plan is set in motion. To confirm Hamlet’s defeat, Laertes’ sword is drenched in poison, and they poison a glass of wine that is also intended for Hamlet. However, during the match, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, accidentally drinks from the poisoned wine, falling to her demise. Many other characters throughout the play meet their demise as well due to Hamlet’s plans for revenge. His love interest, Ophelia, and his best friend, Polonius, both face their deaths due to Hamlet’s plot. During the duel, Hamlet realizes what Claudius and Laertes have done, forcing Laertes to exchange swords with him. Hamlet, as well as Laertes, are both fatally stabbed during the battle, consequently resulting in both being poisoned from the sword. Before dying, however, Hamlet finally gets his revenge by killing Claudius. The story of Hamlet ends in his tragic demise and although he does not live to see it, he achieves his goal of killing
