The Comparing of the Tones
In T.S Eliot’s “Journey of the Magi” and Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” the monologues are completely different. What makes these dramatic monologues different is the tone they are written in because it gives a different visual representation of the speaker. Reading T.S Eliot’s monologue we hear a sad and worried tone compared Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” that has a slower and a neural tone which makes one feels that he does not care about his circumstances. In these two monologues the tone is very crucial because it helps form the character in the monologue which makes the story be hide the monologue better.
In T.S Eliot’s Monologue “Journey of the Magi” the speaker is one of the three wise men traveling to Bethlehem to see the birth of baby Jesus. As one reading this monologue one can tell that the wise man is unhappy with his journey to Bethlehem because of how hard it was for them to get there. The introduction for this monologue says it all “A cold coming we had for it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey…”. The wise man knew before he started the journey that it was not going to be easy. The wise man complains about going to Bethlehem all the way until they actually arrive. One they arrive and the wise man sees all the sacrifices that have to be made for the birth of Jesus he is really concerned and unsure if this is a good or bad thing. When the wise man says “were we led all that way for Birth or Death?” he is referring to the birth of Jesus but in order for baby Jesus to be born all the other babies and many children had to die. One can understand why the wise man was questioning if the birth was a good thing because death is not something that one should be happy about.
