Lavonte Douse Ms. Ressler Literature and composition September 26, 2014 Should a teenager be given too much freedom? No, teens like to be in charge of their lives, feeling as if they are adults. But too much power is not good. A teen without rules and boundaries is a walking time bomb. Doing what ever they want as they please and not knowing what consequences are awaiting. Just like Holden and Miles, two teens with way to much freedom. Catcher in the rye by J.D Salinger and Looking for Alaska by John Green are both novels that share similar character points of view, themes and settings. In both novels love, life, and setting are reoccurring themes throughout. In both novels Pudge and Holden both wanted companionship and love. In catcher in the rye Holden tried to hide his true feelings for Jane. A girl that he played chess with during the summer. Holden even went on a date with a girl named Sally and at first he was in love and wanted her to run away with him, but towards the end of the date he began to hate her. Both Miles and Holden share similar lives. They both are teenage boys who are struggling in school and don’t really have adult supervision. Miles in Looking for Alaska is about sixteen years of age, and due to bad influences he starts to smoke, drink and isn’t doing as well in school as he used to. Similar to Miles, Holden is also flunking classes but instead he is kicked out of School. Both boys have friends present throughout the story. Miles has two main friends, his roommate Chip Martin and Alaska Young. While Holden struggles to keep real friends and seeks companionship and conversation with anyone who will listen.
