Depression is an extreme version of sadness. Patients of depression may experience a lack of ability to be pleasured, no interests to participate in activity, excess of sleep hours, and inability to concentrate in daily tasks. In order to gain knowledge about depression symptoms and treatments, two movies are analyzed to demonstrate melancholic depression and major depressive disorder in a broader perspective. From comparing and contrasting the movies Melancholia and Side Effect, we raise the further needs of analyzing psychology in movies. In movie Melancholia, a girl called Justine has just found the one she loved preparing for a big wedding. However, during the wedding night, Justine is insulted by her mother and harassed by her boss. She turns out to be very depressed, but continues to be blamed by her sister for her sulkiness. After the party, Justine acts very unusual. She drifts out several times, and tries to pee on the golf court. She supposed that she would have a great night with her husband Michael, but she gives up Michael and acts intimately with a stranger. She looses her job for belittling her boss in public. Everybody believes that she is just in a bad mood, but nobody notices that it is just the start for her melancholic depression, which may have occurred by various pressures from her wedding and her discovery of the …show more content…
As a result, they show increasing effectiveness with their treatments at the end. Recalling the different gists in movies, Side Effect, seems to have a more accurate portrayal of treatments for Emily and provides details about the process of treatments (conversations in psychotherapy and description about anti-depressant drugs). In reality, psychologists suggest that the best way to treat depression would be the combination of psychotherapy and anti-depressant drugs, like the movie Side Effect
