“The Story of an Hour” and “A Pair of Silk Stockings” are both Written By Kate Chopin. The other story “The Yellow Wall Paper” is written by Charlotte Perkins. Women wrote all three of these stories in the 1800’s. During this time woman were treated as second-class citizens. Very much like African Americans at this time. In all of the writings the time period is very clear. In all three stories the main character is a woman. In each story the problems faced are very specific to this time period. In “A Pair of Silk Stockings” is the only one that maybe could say that the problem was not time specific. However, in a different time, she could have her own money and a job. In “A Story of an Hour” they pronounced her husband dead when he was very much alive which tends to not happen anymore. Also after she is done crying about her husband, she begins to recite “Free” over and over again. She is extremely depressed, this makes her feel bad, and she begins to hallucinate. Her husband are both very well respected doctors and both insist that nothing is wrong with her, this only depresses her more. During this time psychology was in the very beginning stages and wasn’t very well understood so the things they did to treat it were far from the best ways to treat people and some like this even made it worse. It was assumed that if you were always weak and for some reason just could not get well then you needed a rest. A rest was staying in the middle of nowhere doing nothing which is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. When you don’t do anything your mind has more time to wonder and play tricks on you, this causes the hallucinations in this story. Anyone would start to lose it if they were put in this
