When we compare the dystopian/utopian film, The Giver, and the dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, it's clear that there are some similarities and some differences. Though some are very difficult to find, there are others that are very obvious. The three obvious topics are, the way the characters cope or try to change their situation, the setting of the book, and the government or leaders that they both have. First and foremost, there are similarities and differences between the characters in both works. One similarity is, the main characters are both trying to change something from their city or their community. In The Giver, Jonas is trying to reach the boundary of memory to replenish people with memories of both happy and very devastating things. In both the film and novel, the citizens are under surveillance and are controlled by rules that are made by the government. In Fahrenheit 451 the main and most well known rule is that people cannot own or read books. If a person had books hidden in their homes, firmen would go pick them up and burn them, or burn the whole house if they didn’t to turn them in. In The Giver one of the main rules was precision of language, meaning they had to explain and describe clearly in one or few words what they meant. A similarity that they both had was about the books. In both fiction pieces books were not used in daily life. In The Giver it wasn’t necessarily that they couldn’t read but not many people new about it. As a final point, there are very similar and very different things about Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver.
