Both The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser show major developments to society that compare to today’s world. The Jungle, by showing the people how the industries actually worked, brought about new laws for the way food must be prepared and handled (Sinclair, 2001). Fast Food Nation told the truth about what was going into their food and what they were actually eating in their fast food restaurants like McDonalds and Burger King. They were both very important to making sure people got the healthy food they were paying for. The Jungle takes the reader on a journey through the life of Jurgis Rudkus. The book explains his families struggles of moving from Lithuania to Packingtown, Chicago. Between the economy and very few job opportunities, their problems are severe. The Jungle also indicates how businesses in this day developed (Sinclair, 2001). The main purpose of this law was to make sure the ingredients were properly labeled. With the passing of this law, it required the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry to inspect the products and inform the police of any violators of the law ("Pure Food and Drug Act ", 2018). Another law that was passed was the Federal Meat Inspection Act.
