Authors Mark Twain and Brian Meehl use their novels in order to emphasize the feelings of adventure and desire to escape from civilization because it is socially corrupt, especially in adolescence. Twain and Meehl illustrate this through their characters showing that civilization corrupts, rather than improves, human beings. These authors show us that ethnic and minority literary theory emphasizes the relationship of cultural identity to individual identity in historical circumstances of overt racial oppression. This essay will show that Twain, and Meehl prove that breaking society’s boundaries for what is “expected” of certain groups will broaden our overall perception of people in a positive way. While looking at this theory, we can see that ethnicity is conceptualized as having a common origin, or culture, that is handed down from one generation to another. This is especially seen within the two novels in which one is based off of the other, and they are more than thirty years apart from one another. In these novels it is apparent that one's ethnic identity is based on a mixture of language, religion, race, and or ancestry. The concept of minority is a sociological term referring to dominance or power relationships. Minority groups are said to have unequal or limited access to power in a society. Inequality and limited access become dimensions of social identity as members of ethnic minority groups are singled out, labeled, and treated unequally on the basis of their cultural or physical differences from the dominant group.
