To Davidson College Math and Biology Departments, I’m Altan Tutar, and I’m a prospective/undeclared math and computer science double major. I’m writing you this letter to demonstrate my interest in participating in this program as well as prove that I’m a proficient applicant. The attributes that qualify me to work as a student researcher are my desire to discover more about computer science and particularly about its interdisciplinary applications in biology, the toolbox that I will provide by the end of the spring semester, my leadership experiences in international conferences, and my ability to persist while learning unfamiliar concepts. Throughout high school, I have been involved in the Model United Nations(MUN), the simulation of the United Nations for high school and college students. As a junior and a senior at high school, I was selected to be the president chair of a General Assembly Committee in the world’s greatest MUN conference in size and prestige: The Hague Model United Nations. I led a diverse group of students to propose solutions to global issues such as the issue of the destruction of biological weapons This experience has taught me that each and every individual in a group is a key part of enriching the process itself. By paying attention to different backgrounds, opinions, and ideas, I realized that as a leader of a group, getting an input from everyone’s perspective is an essential step to reach the best outcome. I also needed to research the topics discussed in the conference in more depth than others considering the fact that I was expected not to make any mistakes as the leader of the committee. The determination that I gained in these multiple experiences will definitely lead me to learn the concepts that I will come across throughout this synthetic biology
