Tatum Thielorn Mr. Kieler English 9 March 16, 2023 Identifying Theme in “The Censors” Things can happen anywhere and anytime to people whether they like it or not. But not everyone can be aware of it. In “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela’s short story, we see that she uses Irony, Dynamic Characters, and Foreshadowing to show us the theme of the story about these things can change a person based on conflict and experience. In this short story, Juan is a guy who meets a girl named Mariana and wants to send her a letter but once he does, he realizes that he needs to get the job to pass the letter through, while he's doing this, he changed as a person and his goals are out the window. For the good or bad, you never know. So you should always have to look out for signs of it and don’t do something that you will regret in the long run. It happened many times in this story and it was very interesting to read about as you go along with it being verbal irony. In paragraph 8, Juan says, “You don’t form a habit by doing something once.” But this is straight-up verbal irony as we go throughout the story by doing it once, it will turn into a habit but you just need to figure out if it's a good habit or not, and if it could affect you and others. Later in the story in paragraph 12, when Juan was working, he “censored it without regret” and “couldn’t stop them from executing him the following morning.” He's showing even more irony because he never even realized that he had just killed himself because he’s got into his job so much just like everyone else had …show more content…

As the readers, we can see that something will happen but not everything can always tell us what will happen based on the type of foreshadowing. “He felt he had climbed a rung in the ladder.” (8) As he kept getting higher in his job, he started to lose himself and became someone totally different. He can see this happening with foreshadowing. The foreshadowing is telling us that as he keeps getting closer to where can be able to get to his letter, the more that he will change, and forget all about his letter. So when he even sees the letter for the first time since he joined this job, he marks it without even realizing that that was his letter, but he doesn’t regret a
