Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a play that takes place in late middle ages. The story is set in a castle in Denmark and follows the story of a prince named Hamlet. Hamlet’s father has been recently killed and his uncle only two months later married his mother and became the next king. Hamlet feels that the two have betrayed his father. Later, the ghost of the deceased king visits Hamlet to explain how his uncle murdered him. The ghost tells Hamlet that he must avenge him. The book follows Hamlet’s quest to try and kill his uncle. All throughout the play Hamlet acts insane and many readers think he is just acting, but this is not the case. He also makes irrational decisions that prove he is actually mentally damaged. His questioning of afterlife causes his suffering and his his suffering results in irrational decisions. This means that his irrational behavior is a result of the questioning of afterlife. It also means that what is causing him harm is also causing him mental damage and is leading him to make those irrational decisions. His questioning of afterlife is causing him to go crazy. Crazy means mentally deranged and irrational, Hamlet definitely is both of these. This means that throughout the entire play he actually went mad. Most readers only think he is pretending but that is not the case. Now his unreasonable actions can be seen as a result of his madness and gives the play a whole new meaning. The situation is is an example of how the uncertainty of afterlife impacts people, for there is no way of knowing what happens after you die. For Hamlet the result was madness and other people can have the same outcome. This play reflects the era of when it was written, in the late 16th century.
