Marginalized communities from around the world and their stories are getting attention through the use of Advocacy Quilts in Ochre Court. With 18 quilts on display that showcase many different stories; struggling communities find their voice. The event is organized by the Nuala Pell Leadership Program and is a response to Salve Regina’s Jubilee Year of Mercy. Following a trip to Washington D.C in October last year, Nuala Pell scholars were introduced to the Advocacy Project. The charity works with international partners to help marginalized communities throughout the world find their voice and combat crises. One of the charity’s programs is the Advocacy Quilts, which are used to tell the stories of marginalized people. Kay Scanlan, a sophomore in the program, was so moved by the quilts that she decided they needed to be brought to Salve. Along with a few other Nuala Pell scholars Scanlan began coordinating the event. …show more content…

Each theme had a specific Pell Scholar to talk about the quilts in further detail. All the quilts focus on different stories from child sacrifice in Uganda to war rape in Mali. Barbara Fitzsimmons helped create two of quilts in the room. One of the quilts she made is the Child Protection Quilt, which tells the stories of families who lost their children to human
