Throughout American history there has been prejudices and stereotypes formed towards certain individuals and groups of people. Much of the same issues of prejudices are still seen today, yet there is a larger awareness and different standards which help to create the America we all live in today. Sociologists have studied the way people interact by using quantitive and qualitative research methods which have helped us to gain knowledge and insight on the ways our society and other cultures value different types of gender and ethnic groups. Although society has largely moved away from racial inequalities, there is still much discrimination and prejudices in today’s society. In other words, taking a situation and seeing it from all perspectives and points of view. It is hard for many people to understand the life of an African American compared to their own life. Simple things throughout the day that wouldn’t stand out to white person, just like myself, yet would look totally different through the eyes of a black person. For example, say you were a white teenage boy walking down the street to your high school and you pass by a elderly woman walking opposite. She may smile and nod and you wouldn't think anything of it. Now say you were a black teenage boy and you are in the same situation, yet as you walk by the elderly woman grabs her purse, looks down and quickly walks past you. It is little things such as this that show the prejudice and discrimination against black people in our society. The way that a tv shows or movies have traditionally shown black people unrealistically shape the way we perceive them in everyday life. “The plethora of inequalities (and global systematic corruptions) affect me deeply- to my very core.
