Nervous System The nervous system is a special and specific system. Unlike other body systems, it consists of a bunch of nerves and neurons that send signals or “messages” to different parts of the body. The nervous system is divided into two separate categories, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral nervous system is made up of the spinal nerves and the brain nerves. It is also broken down into two different groups, voluntary and involuntary movement. Voluntary movement deals with the nerves of the brain and spinal cord. They can range from epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) and even strokes. Epilepsy or seizures occur when abnormal signals are sent out from the brain. It almost acts like a spasm and the body freezes up. Seizures can also occur when there is a blunt force to the head, strokes, tumors or prenatal injury. Alzheimer’s disease is a common form of dementia, where the nerve cells in the brain deteriorate and die, and memory loss occurs. Unfortunately, scientist don’t really know what causes Alzheimer’s disease. MS occurs when the immune system attacks myelin, a fatty material, that wraps around the nerve fibers to protect them. Without that protection, the nerves become damaged and the brain can’t send proper signals to your body. With that being the case, people with MS have a hard time with feeling and movement, along with experiencing difficulty walking or sitting for long periods of time. The amount of pain the person is feeling depends on the severity of the affliction. Strokes occur when blood flow is cut off to the brain, either by a clot or vessel rupturing. When this occurs, the brain loses oxygen and within time the cells begin to die. Victims of strokes lose movement and muscle strength on one side of their body.
