The United States takes pride in its rich history and strong people. But let’s face it; we are not at the top of the list when it comes to education. For many years the US has struggled in finding a right or at least sensible way to educate our children. I will not say that the current curriculum does not work for some but numbers don’t lie. Several statistics are showing many
American public schools are failing our students, teachers and parents, particularly in urban areas. Not enough students reach college, and many who do are not prepared. What factors are being considered in the improvements of education in the US? What can be done to help?

The current curriculum used in public schools is made up of five core academic courses,
Science, English, Social Studies, Math and Language. In a perfect world, students would take each core subject every year. But the world isn’t as straight forward thinking and colleges don’t expect student to be. As students float through college without learning much in the way of critical thinking. About a third of students failed to demonstrate significant gains in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing ability. What students learn in school does not translate into later life success. But probability for success is gauged by standardized testing.

The earliest record of standardized testing comes from China, where job seekers for government jobs had to pass tests on Confucian philosophy and poetry. Two of the most known standardized tests are SAT and the ACT. The SAT came first the Scholastic Aptitude Test was founded in
