Introduction I decided to observe American Fork’s In-N-Out for a few reasons; my main reason for choosing this location is because as I order I question why a secret menu exists, and what makes In-N-Out different than the other burger joints. In my experience, as soon as you walk up to the restaurant doors there's a familiar smell that makes you want to enter. The clean atmosphere feels refreshing, which can be seen as contradictory to the greasy aroma of burgers. Subconsciously, the whole restaurant feels familiar and what I have come to know that feeling as is the feeling of family. I think this is a subliminal trick the restaurant architects use to control the lines. Since people stop a few feet before the people in front of them the employees know who is ordering next and it also gives the restaurant a more open feel while ordering. In-N-Out’s location is perfect; their neighborly competition is Zaxby’s and Zupas. Zaxby’s is mainly a sit down restaurant, rarely is there a car in the drive thru, the only time I saw a car there was when a trailer was pulling into get food and the trailer couldn’t fit under the roof so they couldn’t get their food because there wasn’t any parking for the trailer. Zupas is a cafe. Then the only sign that is noticeable on the freeway is in-n-out so they’re getting the traffic flow too. The only restaurant that is even a bit of a temptation if you're in the mood for fast food is Costa Vida but that is located down the street and to the left hard to find unless you know where it is.
