The art I chose at the RISD Museum was Race Riot by Andy Warhol in 1964. Andy Warhol was a leading artist in the pop art movement. He was involved in a wide array of art: films, performance art, writing, video, ads, and even music. Obsessed with the celebrity lifestyle he opened a club called the Factory. The Factory quickly became one of the hottest clubs in new york with a wide variety of celebrities visiting on a normal basis. In 1968, Warhol was shot several times by Valerie Solanas, a writer who starred in a few of Warhol’s films. Warhol spent weeks in a hospital undertaking several surgeries. In the end, he was had to wear a surgical corset for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1987 due to complications from his gall bladder being removed. Race Riot is a photograph of a police dog attacking a civil-rights protester in Birmingham Alabama taken by Charles Moore, who instead of fighting with his fists wanted to fight injustice with his camera. This black and white image may be devoid of any colors, but it is full of emotion. Depicting a time fueled by racial hate and insensitivity it throws you into the middle of a protest. The greek’s ideal body and art style were revered by Europeans for centuries influencing countless artists from then until even now. In the early 1900’s art played a major role in modern architecture. Introducing new concepts like open spaces, the use of modern materials, and flat roofs. Today public figures manipulate images of themselves to make them look better or control where people look, while this can’t be considered art, manipulated images certainly have an effect on everyone who sees
