The qualities of the main characters in the film, Atonement, Directed by Joe Wright are used to illustrate key messages such as the theme of guilt, forgiveness, and atonement. The entire plot of the novel centers on a women who devotes her entire life repenting a crime she committed while still a young girl. The film exhibits the power of written words and the ability it has to manipulate a reader. Narrator and protagonist Briony Tallis betrays her readers, on the “hottest day of 1935”, as 13 year old Briony Tallis wrongfully accuses her older sister’s lover. This opening scene shines light on Briony's personality and what it was like living as a child in the early 1930s England. The opening shot of the dolls house signifies the wealth of the Tallis family to the audience and also suggests youth and innocence of the owner as it is obviously a child's belonging. As the camera pans a line of toy animals lined up biggest to smallest leading to Briony, symbolising power and manipulation of her close family and how she isnt able to do this to others forecasting her time out of her home in the nurse ward when she is 18. She is rather larger in comparison to the rest of the room. Wright does this to show she is “god like”, that has the power of manipulation. Briony’s passion for neatness is where her love for writing and creation comes from. The typing sounds from a typewriter which Briony is crafting “The Trails of Arabella” on, is the first thing heard by the viewer.
