Many schools are banning books with the intention of protecting students from topics that may be seen as harmful. Among these bans are works such as To Kill A Mockingbird, which was banned for racism and offensive language. Many of the books being banned discuss topics such as racism and sexuality. While these topics are difficult, it is important students are educated on these matters. Schools need to stop having banned books because books provide realistic lessons, banning books can cause gaps in learning for students and banning books that express different beliefs contributes to ignorance and prejudice. Many books are being banned because they discuss difficult topics that may make students uncomfortable. While these topics are difficult, they are also realistic and relevant to life. For example, To Kill A Mockingbird is a story of two kids watching their father, who is lawyer charged with defending a black man who was falsely accused of raping a white woman. This book was banned from a Mississippi school district because it “makes people uncomfortable” (Schaub). Racism and prejudice are generally uncomfortable topics, but that does not make them less relevant or important. The topics in these books are supposed to make you uncomfortable. If we restrict books discussing sexuality, racism and prejudice, students may struggle to discuss these issues. Along with this, banning these books poses a threat to teachers' lesson plans. Teachers have a specific curriculum they are required to teach, and books play a large part in the students' understanding. These banned books help students imagine different lives and cultures outside of their own. Banning books indirectly teaches children that they can stop an idea or an opinion because they disagree with it. Restricting these books negatively impacts the influx of information students
