Life As A Meteorologist
1 Weather is all around us all of the time. We feel it, see it, and sometimes hear it. Think of all of the amazing things that the weather does each day. When you turn on the television to see if you’re able to go fishing this weekend or if you need to take a jacket, the person on the screen will most likely be a meteorologist. A meteorologist is a person who studies the weather and forecasts it. I want to be a meteorologist because I’ve always loved the weather and all that it can do. Working in meteorology has a lot of variety, from from reporting forecasts, to researching weather phenomenons, to storm chasing, to coming up with new ways to keep the public safe. 2 Meteorologists have all kinds of responsibilities,

10 One pro includes the satisfaction of knowing that you can and will save a town from natural disasters. Even if that doesn’t happen everyday, you can research and analyze data to help people in the future. You don’t have to be a surgeon or a firefighter to save lives! 8 Another pro is that there aren’t many health hazards, just common things like being around germs and sickness. If you’re a storm chaser, that’s a different story. When meteorologists chase tornadoes, they put their life in danger. 11 With pros, there are also cons, like the odd working hours. Working at night, on holidays and on weekends just doesn’t sound very ideal. Another con would be that you couldn’t wear green due to the use of green screens when forecasting (Shmoop). 3 Some organizations that hire meteorologists include the National Weather Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). 15 There are small places you can work at, like your local weather station, or national places you can work at like the United States Government, the United States Military and the United States Air Force.
