Beowulf is one of the oldest epic poems that has ever been discovered and preserved by Historians, but, due to its age, the original author has proved hard to identify. The only information speculated about the author is that he was a monk who lived between the 700s and 1000s, and the booked is traced to have been written in England during the Anglo-Saxon times. While there is not much definitive information about the author, though, the Beowulf poem provides a descriptive reflection of the author. The style the author uses to write, the information he provides, and the context he provides it in give the readers a sense of what he believed in and valued. These aspects are shown through the characters in the story, the main plot, and the belief system the people use in the epic. Only one god is mentioned in the epic, and they refer to him as God, which is the one god in the Christian religion. They ask him for help during wars, and they believe that he will decide who is the rightful victor. This contrasts with fate, for the author showed God’s will and Wyrd as controlling the warriors’ lives. In relation to the wars, everyone thanked God afterwards for helping them win the war, and they trust God in every decision he makes, whether it be good or bad for the civilization. The afterlife is also depicted when Beowulf dies. He hopes for a great life when he dies, and thinks he will have a great afterlife when he sees all the treasure he brought to his kingdom. The two religions do not really have a separation in this epic, and it seems that the author believed in a mix of the two.
