In the novel Brother by David Chariandy, being and identifying as a part of a community is one of the principal themes. Based in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, the author uses The Park as the book's main setting. The Park is where the protagonists, Micheal and Francis, live, along with the surrounding community members. This is where they are all mainly negatively affected by racism, poverty and violent incidents. Firstly, being young adults of black and brown ancestry, they are constantly victims of racism. But even with the additional and tiring efforts to support her family, she could not finish her nursing studies, cannot afford needed healthcare, is in deep debt, and sometimes cannot even afford food. But these issues are not abnormal in The Park, they are everywhere. “All around us in the Park were mothers who had journeyed far beyond what they knew, who took day courses and worked nights, who dreamed of raising children who might have just a little more than they did, children who might reward sacrifice and redeem a past” (Chariandy 146). It is not just Ruth (mother) who is struggling, but every mother and parental figure in the community is fighting to make ends meet. Hence the members of The Park are populated with financially struggling guardians which affects them and their families. Lastly, The Park is notorious for its violent incidents, some of which Michael and/or Francis have been involved in. The members are known to be violent; police are always on-scene and they are used to the latter. One particular situation already mentioned was during Jelly’s audition at the CNE. After being negatively treated, Francais decided to retaliate and try to get Jelly the opportunity to pass. This caused him, Micheal and the group of friends to fight with the bodyguards after being denied the chance, seriously injuring them. Consequently, the police tracked down the
