Cadet Teaching I Austin VanDevender have the exciting opportunity to Cadet Teach at both Centerville Elementary and Rose Hamilton Elementary. I cadet teach for all grades from Kindergarten to 6th grade. This is great experience I have because I get to see the differences of grade levels. My supervising teacher is Mrs. Charlton, she is in charge of the Physical Education classes for both elementaries. I am extremely lucky to have Mrs. Charlton as my supervisor. I’ve learned a lot from following her. While i 'm at cadet i have many responsibilities. First thing I do when I get to Centerville Elementary is check the desk to see if Mrs. Charlton has anything for me to do. I have a long list of my most memorable memories while cadet teaching. These vary from sharing stories with Mrs. Charlton all the way to helping students throw a football. There’s one memory that sticks out to me very vividly though. That memory would have to be me having the honor to be around Dylan. Dylan is a fifth grader who suffers from an illness called Spina bifida. Spina bifida is “a congenital defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord and its meninges are exposed through a gap in the backbone. It often causes paralysis of the lower limbs, and sometimes mental handicap.” (google.com). This illness causes dylan to be in the special Ed classroom. I’ve learned so many different things from dylan, not only has he made me a better person, he has helped me think from a different perspective. Every since meeting Dylan I picture myself in other people 's shoes. I have never seen dylan in a bad mood, he always ask “What are you doing Austin”, which is usually followed by a hug. Meeting Dylan has made me think, if we were all so caring and loving like Dylan the world would be a better place. When I first decided to take cadet teaching I was only thinking about the “easy A”, little did i know this class would change my life. Within the first couple weeks of cadet teaching I realized this could be something I might want to do as a profession. Through cadet teaching I have made amazing friends and many unforgettable
