My salient career goal is to become a successful independent computer engineer, as women are a minority in the engineer field. In order to achieve that goal I have kept smaller goals that will build up. These are to graduate with a 4.0 GPA from the University of Houston and to gain as much experience and skills during this journey. I am confident enough to say that as long as I remain dedicated I will definitely reach my goals.
I will be writing about the goal I’m focusing on now, that is to graduate with a 4.0 GPA and how I am planning on making the best out of this experience. I am an international student from Suriname, and coming to study at the University of Houston is life changing. A huge transition for me was going from Dutch, which is my first language, to English. I grew up in a third world country that has been going through a lot of difficulties such as lack of or inadequate medical amenities, security issues/robberies, corruption, poverty, and high food and fuel prices. The schools in Suriname are also in a very poor condition, as they don’t have air conditioners in the classrooms. Also when it rains a bit too heavy, the classrooms tend to come under water. I am currently working for the company “I AM GOLD” in Suriname and I have worked two jobs during high school doing administrative work. However, the job that I am presently attending is more related to my major which is pretty beneficial. I am being taught programming and I have been given the possibility to assist the help desk support team. I have also gotten the opportunity to interact with the employees and ask them for advice. By working here I am demonstrating my skills, but I am also finding the areas that I surely have to work on. Being in a work environment like this is a decent way to get a real sense of my chosen
