Even though some argue that changing the drinking age to 18 isn't wise, it actually helps to create more responsible drinking habits and better opportunities for education about the risk associated with drinking. Drinking responsibly is a major problem especially for adolescents who often, consume alcohol in unhealthy and irresponsible ways. Currently, in the U.S. the first time most people can legally drink is during college, often a hotbed for parties and irresponsible drinking practices. It is important that someone's first exposure to drinking is done in a responsible, and safe manner with supervision from a responsible party. Many new drinkers take part in binge drinking, consuming a large quantity of alcohol in a short period of time a dangerous practice. “The CDC found that teens drink 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the U.S., and more than 90 percent of this alcohol is consumed during binge drinking.” Two-thirds of teens admitted to binge drinking within the last month and the death rate from alcohol poisoning has tripled since the law went into effect. (Gordon, et al) Many experts believe that lower the drinking age will help to alleviate a portion of the problems created by underage and irresponsible drinking. When an anthropology professor at Brown University was interviewed about the drinking age he said the drinking age should be “8, or maybe even 6”.
