Confederate Flag
This summer the confederate flag that flew outside the South Carolina State capitol was removed. The debate whether they should remove it all started when a white man went to a church and killed nine African Americans with a gun. This man had pictures with white supremacist flags from South Africa and Rhodesia and with the Confederate flag. He also drove a car with a Confederate flag license plate. Because of the Confederate flag, people believed that it looked bad that South Carolina flew the Confederate flag. There are now debates on whether the action of removing the flag is justified, or simply an overreaction. I believe that it is an overreaction for three reasons; we have freedom of speech, it is part of our nation’s history, and it’s simply NOT a racist symbol.
It says in the constitution that we the people have freedom of speech. The definition of freedom of speech is the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. In the 1940s and 1950s the Confederate flag stood for “The Rebel”. It was featured in the popular television show “The Dukes of Hazard” on top of the General Lee with Bo and Luke Duke acting as two good ole country boys. This had nothing to do with racism or slavery. In the 60s and 70s country artists used the flag as a symbol of hardworking people. To many people it represents an area of where you are from and patriotism. The Confederate flag is a symbol of pride. It represents our nation’s heritage and tradition.
In conclusion, I believe the removal of the Confederate flag is an overreaction. Americans have freedom of speech, the Confederate flag is an important part of our nation’s history, and the Confederate flag is not a symbol of racism. The South Carolina shooting is a tragedy. But I think removing the flag was a definite
