During the revolutionary war congress felt that it needed a document to unite the states and set forth the principles and laws of the nation. Benjamin Franklin wrote the first draft of the articles to congress although it was never formally considered. It wasn’t until the 4th version of a draft was presented by John Dickinson, which congress began to feel closer to what they were looking for. After being revised three times, the document was approved to be submitted to the states in November 1777. All but one state, Maryland, agreed to the articles.
The legislative branch creates laws for the United States citizens to follow. The legislative branch has bicameral structure with the branch being made of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This branch is known as the people's branch due to the fact that the citizens of the U.S. elect each branch member. The members of each branch has a different term limit, the House of Representatives have a two year term limit and the Senate has a longer term of six years. The legislative branch has the control of the national budget.
Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Article 1 section 3 of the Constitution states that the Senate is the only one who can grant impeachments and the impeachment cannot be granted if there is not a two-thirds vote in agreement among the Senate. In article 1 section 7 the House of Representatives is where the bills to pass laws are made but the Senate is the one who decides to pass them or not. Congress has the power to override the president's veto and make a law be passed only if two-thirds of the House agree. Article 1 section 8 says all of the things that Congress can do.

EXPLANATION OF THE KEY TERM The key term that I have chosen is “federalism.” In Lee Hamilton’s How Congress Works and Why You Should Care, he initially begins discussing federalism in the section named “Why Federalism Works.” To begin, Hamilton begins to reminisce on his experience in Congress and gives a brief and rather broad explanation to it, but he he goes on to use an example that is more relatable to the average person: 7th grade Civics class.

Government has changed over time and space. When the framers made this country, it is not what we see today as modern-day America Government. The biggest shift in American history is the decline in Congressionally-centered government to Presidentially centered government. Congressionally centered government was about congress had complete power American government in law making process. It was during the Woodrow Wilson era in nineteenth century with his ideas and the intentions of the framers.
The Congress is the supreme potent branch in the US, holds the agendas of the government. The two major political parties in the US Congress are The Republican and the Democratic Party with the Democratic Party comprising of 188 seats and the Republicans 246 seats. The Congress performs functions such as, representation of the people, law making, oversight performance, ensuring the public is fully educated and serving their constituents. Several factors have made it difficult for the democrats and Republicans in the congress to expressive a rational political outline.
The congress is the part of Legislative branch whose duty is to make the laws that are beneficial to the nation. Congress not only interprets the law it also has power to declare the war. Congress also represents the common public. Congress is broken due to several factors, for instance; the filibuster, the fundraising, difficulty in interpreting the law, hyperactive media, few representatives and many others. There are many causes of broken congress, but the main important are the difficulties which representatives are facing to make the law.
The trend in congressional polarization overshadows the trends in public. While congressional moderates dissipate, moderates in the public “in the United States stands at its highest point in more than 75 years” according to polling (Smith). Many moderates ‘lean’ toward the left or right which causes the first problem in many polarization studies. Polarization means that constituents disperse from the center of the line to either or right into political parties, not necessarily radical, but many of these ‘leaners’ continue to vote on an issue to issue basis (Enns and Schuldt). Congressional polarization differs immensely; this trend appears more as sorting where partisans move to more “extreme ideologies” (Hill and Tausanovitch 1060).
We are expected by each other to look a certain way, buy certain things, and act accordingly. There is a cardboard-cutout version of everyone that we must adhere to in order to be deemed pleasing by society. When we don’t quite fit in – when we don’t put forth an illusion and force people to confront reality – we are left alone. Until a time where those around you finally see that there is more to a human being than what they look like on the outside. It is often said that individuals are of what they do not know, terrified of what they do know, and frightened of what they have the potential of finding out.
Article V of the Constitution states that “The congress…shall propose Amendments to this Constitution”. Amendments to the Constitution are essential and allow for changes in law as times and values change. In today's world, I believe that there are many necessary amendments that should be proposed in order for the supreme law of the land to remain up to date with the values of a modern world. If I were able to propose the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution it would state, “Those serving in congress shall be subjected to term limits in order to ensure congressional turnover. Those serving in the Senate will be subjected to a maximum of two terms totaling twelve years, those serving in the House of Representatives will be subjected to a
The Senate and House of Representatives comprise the two chambers of the United States Congress. While both houses are representative bodies and jointly oversee the executive branch, both must approve all bills before the president, but both chambers have different roles according to the Constitution. The House of Representatives has 435 members apportioned to the house from across the United States. States with larger populations receive more seats within the house.
The Federalist argued that Congress, specifically the House of Representatives would be able to gain the confidence and sympathy of the people. In Federalist 52, Madison writes: “As it is essential to liberty that the government in general, should have a common interest with the people; so it is particularly essential that the branch of it under consideration, should have an immediate dependence on, & an intimate sympathy with the people.” Biannual elections, therefore, were key to the “intimate sympathy” that the Members of the House were supposed to have with the people. The House of Representatives would allow the rights and interest of the people to be protected in the way it carries out its elections. Although the Federalist did argue that all men will pursue their own ambitions, the representatives would be elected by a large variety of individuals, allowing the people to have the final say on the election of the representatives.
Congress is the most powerful branch of the U.S. government. With so much power I think it’s obvious that there will be some dysfunction. The main reason for this dysfunction is that we have two major parties with such strong opinions that cause conflict to arise. However, this does not change my overall view of congress. I do think congress is functional because it works effectively to introduce bills that will be a benefit to the American people.
