The Thought of Suffering
The future of our nation and our world is in the hands of the people sitting down in desks not too far away from you. Have you ever talked about how these kids are genuinely feeling? Have you ever felt like someone in your class was struggling with even coming to school everyday? These questions are normally answered with the fact that they wouldn’t know, or that their students don’t feel comfortable talking about it with them. That needs to change. In 2017 Netflix releases a screen adaptation of the book 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher written in 2007. The show was made in hopes to help those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts. However, reportingonsuicide.org has guidelines media should follow in order to decrease the number of copycat suicides following the media post. 13 Reasons Why goes against multiple guidelines that are critical to decreasing the number of copycat suicides. However, one of the villains involved in this dilemma is suicide. When people don’t talk to anyone and feel like they can’t do so, they are stuck in their battlefield mentality. All counselors and possibly teachers can give their students the resources to help avoid a tragic suicide. I personally feel terrified that my sister has had thoughts of suicide because she has mentioned, although not diagnosed, that she has anxiety and I have seen the toll it takes on her. She gets nervous around a large group of people, she is nervous to go to school some days, she feels pressure to please all of her superiors and feels worthless when she doesn’t, or they don’t react the way she expects them to do. She is very well educated on mental illness, and because of that, I feel like I don’t have the credibility to talk about my own problems. It is not healthy to have these thoughts bottled up in someone and can have tragic results. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, is a company that educates people on how to detect mental illness especially educating people of the warning signs of suicide. NAMI provides general education on the warning signs of both mental illness and suicide. They also provide a hotline in the case of a desperate situation.
