Three Ladies Showing Courage During WWII In Code Name Verity, by Elizabeth Wein, it is certainly safe to say that there are many courageous characters, this is World War 2. One of the minor but still important characters, Jamie Beaufort-Stuart presents some traits of a courageous person. When Jamie’s plane crashed into the sea (p163), it was so cold that Jamie “had to concentrate on the ones he’d miss the most,” the ones meaning his fingers. He managed to save three fingers on each hand by sticking them in his mouth. While there are so many characters that display these attributes, there are three main figures that stand out the most, Margaret - Maddie - Brodatt, for facing her fears, Julia - Julie - Beaufort-Stuart, for accepting her fate and continuing on even though she thinks her friend is dead and Fraulein Anna Engel for doing what she believes is right. Margaret is able to fly in the dark and fix engines belonging to any type of vehicle, these are just some of her many skills. Closer to the middle of the book, Maddie is mentioning that she’s one of the Always Terrified Airwomen (ATA) and Jamie says “you, afraid? My eye.” She continues on to say that she is afraid of firing guns, which is pointed out several times and ironically, her most courageous moment was shooting her best friend. Being courageous is having the ability to do what it is that you are afraid of. Maddie exhibits a lot of courage in that moment after Julie yells “kiss me Hardy, kiss me quick!” And she makes the hasty decision of pulling the trigger and ending her best friend’s life.
