More than one in five Americans can expect to have depression within their lifetime. Depression is feelings of severe despondency and dejection. This affects more than 19 million Americans each year. Out of all patients that are diagnosed with depression, 15% of them commit suicide. The other 85% can be treated and recover from it. Unfortunately, not all of them can be treated for it. Therefore, they fall underneath the 15% category or learn to cope with it. All these statistics are dramatic and involve depression in the United States. The follow will discuss and define depression, symptoms of depressions, causes, and different types and methods to treat depression. First off, depression is truly defined as “An emotional state in which there are extreme feelings of sadness, dejection, lack of worth, and emptiness”. Alternative words used for depression usually include: gloomy, discouragement, lonely, mood changes, and the much more. Simply, depression broken down is an emotional state of something tragic and upsetting for a long period of time (Depression, n.d.). Meditation and breathing practices are ways to help calm someone down. This will allow them to feel more relaxed and not be stressed out. Yoga, for instance, is a great exercise for people to do when they are depressed. It releases negative energy out of their systems. Music is something to help cope with depression. Not a cure by any means, but helps people through tough situations. There a few medicines like: tricyclic antidepressants, tetracyclic antidepressants, sertraline, and others. Just like any other type of medication, symptoms can be caused when taking these that can make them feel sick.
