This paper is a written reflection based on the interview of a school district treasurer. Representing Monongalia County Schools, Mrs. Nicole Kemper was interviewed as the district’s Chief School Business Official and Treasurer.

Over the last few years, the role of a district treasurer has become increasingly important, especially when it comes to ensuring that schools operate efficiently and within budget constraints. It reflects the district’s priorities and guides the allocation of financial resources. Mrs. Kemper emphasized the importance of the budgeting process as an opportunity to set priorities for the coming school year, considering various factors such as enrollment, population growth, and changing needs of the district. During the budgeting process, there must be a balance between the needs of the schools and the financial resources available.
Mrs. Kemper explained that she works closely with the superintendent, Dr. Campbell, to review the district’s goals and strategic planning to ensure that funding is available for the district’s plans. By closely working with the superintendent, the treasurer allows the superintendent and school board to plan appropriately for programs to meet the needs of the community’s students. Kemper and I discussed was the certified list. The certified list is a list of employees and their salaries. The certified list is a crucial document that lists all the individuals who are eligible to receive payment from the school district. It is the treasurer’s responsibility to ensure that this list is accurate and up to date, as any discrepancies can lead to serious financial issues. It provides a detailed picture of the district’s payroll expenses and serves as an essential component of financial reporting.
