Dolores Huerta once said, “We must use our lives to make the world a better place to live, not just to acquire things. That is what we are put on the earth for.” Using her life to make the world a better place is exactly what Dolores Huerta did, she put her most effort into making a change not only for the farm workers but for everyone. Growing up, Dolores Huerta had to deal with a lot of discrimination which shaped her into the person she is now. During her time in the University of the Pacific’s Delta College, she received an associate teaching degree and taught school. Dolores Huerta remains outspoken and indefatigable even after nine decades of her life (Godoy para 8). She continues to work with agricultural communities and advocates on issues such as health, education, and economic development (Godoy para 8). Huerta left teaching and became an activist after not being able to stand seeing the children of migrant workers, her students, arrive to class hungry and barefooted (“Dolores” para 2). She first co-founded the Agricultural Workers Association in 1960 and later in 1962 she co-founded the United Farm Workers Association (“Dolores” para 3). The farm workers were able to come together and strive for their rights with Dolores Huerta's help, “Huerta negotiated a contract between the UFWOC and Schenley Wine Company, the first time that farm workers successfully bargained with an agricultural enterprise” (“Dolores” para 3). If Huerta were to never have organized the farm workers and united them to fight for their rights, they would still be dealing with many difficulties to this day. Dolores Huerta's contributions towards the start of the farm workers' fights is what led to a change. With her help, the farm workers had hope for better wages and working conditions.
