What makes up a family? Does it require a mother, father and children living under the same roof? Does it require connection by blood, lineage or ancestry? Can there be a family among individuals not in any way related to each other? When do say you have a family? Instead of coming up with a standard definition of what a family is, I will enumerate or identify what I consider are the elements that make up the true meaning of a family.

Foremost are the elements of affection, security and support. Affection or love is a natural must-have in order for one to feel that he or she belongs to a family. Every member of the family has an important role of being there for each other no matter what. Security is one of the important factors in building a family. In order to feel secure, each member should have trust for each other. A child must feel that while his parents are around, no harm will fall on him, and that his needs will be met. Another form of security needed in the family is emotional security, and this giving someone an assurance that we will be there for them; that they are loved and important. When we receive importance and attention, we feel emotionally secured. Without emotional security, we may feel alone, that there is no family to lean on. This often leads people to seek temporary or even false security offered by drugs, alcohols and other vices. Every person wants to be loved, accepted and respected. It is important that they are assured they can depend on their family. Support can also be emotional, social and psychological. It is important that one feels that there is always someone who will be there for him or her no matter what. In a family, one can expect all the help needed, that he or she is not alone, that there is always someone to turn to. There is family where members support each other and be there for each other in good times and in bad. Support does not mean that they will always agree with each. They may disagree but still respect each others’ opinion. With the support of a family, each member will feel braver, stronger and ready whenever and whatever life throws at them. Just like all of the other characteristics of a family, support is important because it helps the family to become stronger. If support is not given, the members will also seek it from something or someone else. In the case of the parents, they must support their child for them to have a bright future ahead. The children should not be deprived of a good life because they do not deserve to be in a poor state of being. Depression is one of the leading problems in the world today. The cause of this is lack of support. A family should support each other in order for them to have a meaningful and positive
