Fibromyalgia is a disease causing musculoskeletal pain and other complications. This is a disease not widely talked about, but that affects many people’s daily lives. When faced with fibromyalgia small things that used to seem almost like second nature become tasks that seem nearly impossible. As this disorder begins to grow, thanks to now knowing more about it, it is important to be informed. To understand this disorder taking a closer look at the symptoms, the process of making the diagnosis, causes, and treatment options is crucial.
Symptoms
With fibromyalgia the amount and severity of symptoms tends to vary from patient to patient; some may experience multiple symptoms while others experience only one. Widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and other problems such as migraines and depression are all symptoms of fibromyalgia (Staff, 2015). Some other possible symptoms include interstitial cystitis, premenstrual syndrome, hyperhidrosis, dyspnea, and acid reflux (What is Fibromyalgia?, n.d.). Of these symptoms widespread pain is the most prominent. The pain is strongest in the morning, but factors such as weather, lack of sleep, fatigue, too much or too little physical activity, and anxiety or stress can all be triggers (Diagnosis , n.d.). A lot of research has been done, and recently it has been found that genetics may play a role in it but a majority of patients with fibromyalgia had an illness or some sort of bodily trauma which onset their disorder (Diagnosis , n.d.). Neurologists are now doing research to test the hypothesis that the abnormal pain perception is caused by a defect in the central nervous system (Diagnosis , n.d.).
