No Direction Home: The Harsh Life of a Foster Child Imagine being forced to leave your family at a young age, only being able to take what can fit in your bag. That is exactly what these children have to go through as they are ripped from their family. One moment can change your life and that is what is happening to these children. The day before, they are having a nice family dinner or out with with their family bonding. Then, the next day, they are forced out to leave a place they’ve known for so long with carrying little to nothing. “In the United States, there are roughly 400,000 children in foster care at any given time.” (3 “Things You Should Know About Foster Care”). Furthermore, children who are going through a family crisis need a safe haven because without the system, the outcome for the children would be uncertain. But even though a foster care is created that way, people still have to realize that children are going through problems. I also found out that around 200,000 kids have exited the foster care system, which is good news stating that half had got the chance to leave foster care. Furthermore, 70% who are inmates/prisoners have touched the foster care system, 80% of those exposed are in death row, 50% will not graduate high school, 95% will not get a degree, and surprisingly, 33% are abused while in the foster care system. But the most staggering statistics that I found out was that foster care children were four times more likely to be exposed to sexual abuse. It is not a good sign knowing that this is how some of the system acts and the way these children are being treated. With that being said, no one should tolerate with
