What is freedom? According to the dictionary, freedom is “the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint”. But what does freedom mean to us? To us, freedom is the power to choose. In America, we are considered free because we have the power to choose who we want to govern our country. Freedom is something we value very highly. We Americans would give anything, including our lives, in order to protect our freedom. Several things happened in history that showed how America was free. Here are a few of them: the Liberty or Death speech, the United States Flag, and the election of a President. First, Patrick Henry’s Liberty or Death speech shoes us how important it is to fight for our freedom. Henry is trying to convey the fact that freedom is something to be valued. He is trying to convince the House of Representatives to go to war against the British. What Henry is trying to say is that the British have never treated us kindly, and there is little chance that they will ever do so. Henry says, “I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery.” Henry wants to fulfill the responsibility that he says God holds them to. The white stripes represent purity and innocence, while the red stripes signify hardiness and valor, and the blue means vigilance and perseverance. The fifty stars represent the fifty states and the thirteen stripes signify the original thirteen colonies that fought Britain. Our flag is a symbol of the hard work Americans did in order to make this land a country. We fought many wars, lost many lives, and endured many hardships in order to be free.
