Essay On Gay Marriage In Texas

Why should marriage in the state of Texas just be confound between a man and a woman? Many people in the gay and lesbian community are having a constant battle with the Texas government about recognizing gay couple’s marriage licenses. We all have the right to love who we love, but why can’t gay and lesbian community have that same right as well? In section 32 of the Texas Constitution it states that “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman (The Texas Constitution).” I believe that all gay and lesbian couples should have the right to be married in the state of Texas because the U.S Constitution legalized gay marriage and because it wouldn't really effect anyone if gay couples got married. Once at the Texas Criminal Court, Lawrence and Garner’s attorney from Lambda Legal stated that the law adopted by the Texas Penal Code was going against the Fourteenth Amendment which guaranteed equal protection because it allowed sodomy between heterosexual couples but not homosexual couples. The attorney also argued that the Supreme Court’s decision on Bowers v. Hardwick, which claimed that no privacy protection between same-gendered couples having consensual sex was needed, was wrongly decided.
