Ethical Issues In Genetic Research

1442 Words6 Pages

CRISPR technology can allow us to start selecting our own superpowers. Technology is constantly evolving, and this allows for more advance research and altering of DNA which opens a door of possibilities and opportunities.
Genetic engineering is the process of using technology to change the genetic makeup of an organism. Genetic engineering is one of the processes which can be used with CRISPR to modify the genes and DNA.
Genetic engineering has three elements that are required for the process to occur: the gene to be transferred, a host cell which the gene can be inserted, and a vector (An organism or chemical used to transport a gene into a new host cell) to allow the transfer. The process is not a complicated process, step one is to attain …show more content…

However genetic engineering one of the most sensitive areas of ethical debate. Genetic engineers have applied genetic engineering to humans to make disease a thing of the past, increase the life span of humans and solve genetic disorders that can be caused by genetic mutation such as cystic fibrosis which can only be inherited. Cystic fibrosis can be “cured” through gene therapy trials which allows for more research to be done to find a permanent cure so that people with cystic fibrosis don’t have to suffer and live short lives. This research will allow for more research which can be connected to other types of genetic mutations and allow genetic engineers to be able to remove it so that it won’t carry on being passed down through later …show more content…

It could help prevent life-threatening and incurable diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and even HIV/AIDS. Even if someone is susceptible to viruses, it can be changed with this type of technology. People can live longer and healthier lives. Women don’t have to menstruate and still be fertile, grow no body hair except for on their head and face and still be able to control their body temperature and stop aging at the age of 50, all this can be accomplished with genetic engineering and CRISPR as well as create a beneficial disease like Alexandria genesis disease. There are also many disadvantages to genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is new and while performing gene therapy and altering people’s genes with genetic engineering and CRISPR there can be many complications that could lead to destructive results that may be irreversible. There are also many ethical and moral issues that are related to modifying human genes and genetically designing your child as this can hamper the genetic diversity in humans if all the defective genes were replaced by functional genes. In such a scenario, all humans will have a similar genetic makeup, and therefore, a new and unknown virus or a disease may affect a large portion of the human
