For those of you who don't know, Gentrification is a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district, a related increase in rents and property values, and changes in the district's character and culture. Walk up along Franklin ave 5 years ago, a historical colored neighborhood that was overlooked for years was filled with mom-pop shops and discount stores. In time the cultures in a neighborhood start to wear out, longtime natives who have moved away to live in the suburbs come back years later to their city they now see as unrecognizable. I read an article today on Governing.com it states that “Gentrification greatly accelerated in several cities.Neighborhoods gentrifying since 2000 recorded population increases and became whiter, with the share of non-Hispanic white residents increasing an average of 4.3 percentage points. Nearly 20 percent of neighborhoods with lower incomes and home values have experienced gentrification since 2000, compared to only 9 percent during the 1990s.” Why is that there is over 2 times more gentrification now then back in 90’s you may ask?
