My experiences, both academic and clinical, continue to motivate my interest for individualized patient care and Georgetown’s ideal of cura personalis. Throughout my senior year, I analyzed the significance of precision medicine within addiction and oncology. Our research, which culminated in a research publication last April, highlighted the importance of studying all aspects of a patient’s background, identity, and illness in order to best treat them as an individual. My commitment to holistic care, along with my interest in addiction and psychiatry clinical research, drew me to work at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders (CWED) and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Nicotine Addiction (CIRNA). By combining medical treatment with individualized counseling, we were able to provide personalized treatment to our patients over a long-term treatment period. Moreover, the current curriculum reform demonstrates Georgetown’s commitments both to innovative teaching techniques and to team-based education. This focus on teamwork skills is also clear through Georgetown’s Learning Societies. During my gap year, I have thoroughly enjoyed working as part of a tight-knit research team, fostering teamwork skills while encouraging and learning from each other, increasing our potential. Teams such as Learning Societies help promote an uncompetitive, supportive atmosphere that is often difficult to find at other medical schools. Having this smaller yet still diverse community helps students hone the crucial skills needed for a physician, such as teamwork, leadership skills, and resilience, while providing opportunities to act as a mentor and a
