Could it be possible that a new Gilded Age is starting? This new era could shape how we live through technological changes that would affect labor and education forever. The gilded age was an era in the United States that started in 1877 it was a time of rapid economic growth and a general shift from an agricultural society to an industrial one. The technological advances during the time allowed for jobs to be done much more efficiently and in a higher capacity. The Rapid expansion of industrial work required many people in the working force. Since the expansion of industrialism was happening so fast, lots of people faced very harsh working conditions. The Gilded Age is not over; it has just started to go into a new phase. Technological advancements are changing the labor force and even replacing the people behind it. A.I. and other technology have been integrated into essentially all workplaces. According to Forbes, more than 90% of businesses have invested in A.I. technologies. A.I. will be able to do a lot of jobs that humans do but with less cost, less management, and less time. From the Gilded age to now there is a massive contrast between how we are having technology create more jobs to having it take job opportunities from people. According to the 2020 World Economic Forum report it predicts that robots will displace 85 million jobs globally in the next five years. And with this “takeover” from A.I. it poses a question; is this shift going to overall be beneficial? Or will it only benefit the 1% while leaving everyone else with nothing? Similar to how business owners during the gilded age were making such a massive profit off of the backs of the working class.
